I think that must be a steel,played single string with a harmonizer on it. The harmonizer will produce thirds for example, which will put you in trouble on the 5 chord. If you are in the key of C and play a B note on the 5 chord (G) the harmonizer will produce an Eb note against your G chord. Ugly! Some of that was going on in that song, intentionally or unintentionally.
