Mr. Emmons, i have your Steel Guitar CD. I was skeptical of how well Pachelbel's Canon would come off with steel. But i was greatly pleased with your execution. It is one of the best versions i ever heard. I like it better than orchestral. My question is: What is the sound(instrument) in the center channel starting in the middle of the tune and continuing til the end? It almost sounds like fiddle, but it's faint, can't make it out. Is that steel? Thanks

I believe the part in question is steel guitar. Buddy overdubbed each part. Very cool tune! Also check out: Buddy's Q&A There is a section devoted to Canon and the 12 string guitar.

Erik,
The part you're referring to is the steel using an Emmons String Machine. The unit contained three fuzz units in one box and was capable of delivering three harmony parts of your choice through individual pole piece pickups mounted above the guitar strings.

Ahh--I always wondered what that thing was (its in the picture on the cover). I'm also curious how you can play the guitar with that thing right over the pickup.

Many years ago, before I started playing the steel guitar, (I was still being seduced) I was in a record shop and I had a choice between The Harmonnicats doing Beethoven or Buddy Emmons doing Taco Bell's Canon. I chose the Canon. It was even better than The Temple City Kazoo Orchestra doing Also Spracht Zarathustra.

Chas....good choice....but don't shortchange the Harmonicats

Thanks for the reply, Mr. Emmons. That explains it's unique sound. Good to know you were able to play out again at the club. Saw the pictures, must have been quite a night. Like many others i wish they would start selling videos or CDs of these performances. Take care.
