New Guy

Post by Thom Ferman »

I'm a brand new forum member and a newbie player too! I've been lurking here for months and have already learned not to talk about a certain CSN&Y tune. Many forum members have already been so helpful! I bought my '97 (not '99) Carter D-10 (without BCT, right Ann!) from member Craig Holden. Michael Johnstone had offered to help me find a good used steel (sorry, I bought the Carter anyway) and he'd also offered to spend time with me to help me get started playing. Michael also told me where to hang out in Burbank to see and hear some great players (Viva Fresh). So far I've seen Michael and Earnest Bovine play there and Earnest has been kind enough to let me know that Jay Dee Maness will be playing there this Saturday 8P-11P. I'm there! Mike Perlowin also returned one of my "what do I do now" emails and offered to spend some time helping me get started. Get well soon Mike, we know you like pickin' steel, but my Winnie Winston book says you're supposed to pick with your fingers, not your head. Seriously, I'm so sorry about your accident and wish you a speedy recovery! Because of this group I've already started working on Jeff Newman's intro video's and will be contacting John McClung to start some real live lessons! This is an amazing resource for seasoned players and beginners alike. I'm proud and humbled to be a part of it.

Hi Thom, you're on the right track. Wish I'd had all this good information when I was starting. By the way what's your age. Just curious. Don.

Thanks for the welcome and encouragement. To finish out about me, I'm 47 (going on 29), I've played guitar and bass for over 30 years. I took up piano when I was 35, but never played enough to get really good at it. However I found the keyboard knowledge I have helps me visualize chord structure and intervals and such. I started playing lap steel about 3 or 4 years ago and have worked that in to a couple of songs I play with a little coffee house band. So now it's on to PSG pickin', really a dream of a lifetime for me! Thanks again everyone and especially to Bobby Lee for creating and running this excellent forum.
