West Side Story

Post by Dr. Hugh Jeffreys »

On West Side Story: I finally got around to listening to West Side Story; I waited until I could hear the complete CD without interruption. Wow! What a piece of work! That really should be a wake-up call for serious steel players. I enjoyed it for many reasons: first, that score is one of Bernstein's best. (I also have it by Stan Kenton). Second, dynamics and syncopation are almost unheard of in steel music; most is "flat liner." That is, no breaks, no phrasing, just a lot of un-interrupted fast playing. Anyway, there are too many great things to say about your CD here. Keep up the fine work, and I truly hope that you find a reputable label company to dispense it. Best, Hugh

Just listened to it the other day. Needed something listen to whiler I stuffed 300 envelopes.
It is a jewel.
Only qurestion I have-- I've not seen Bernstein's name anywhere on it as composer....
Anyone who doesn't have it should get it and give it a listen.
Great stuff.

Mike is indeed taking our beloved instrument into uncharted territory. I have listened and enjoyed both his Firebird Suite, and now West Side Story. If you haven't heard these works, I encourage you to get them, and see what avenues are yet to be explored. This is definitely out of the box. And I love it.

Actually, I play an Emmons ... oh wait, you weren't referring to me? Image

I would like to join everyone in sending kudos to Mike for always being adventurous and innovative. I also hope he is feeling better. Boo "The Other" Bernstein

Au contraire, Guillaume. I know for a fact that Mike worked off charts when he was learning this music.
