Siloam Springs Steel Show

Post by Keith Hilton »

I just returned from playing the Sager Creek Arts Center, Siloam Springs, Arkansas. Their 8th Annual Steel Guitar Convention was today and tomarrow. It was great to see old friends and a few new players I had not seen before. One of the high points of the show, for me, was seeing Jerry Newberry's 7 year old grandson take the stage with Jerry. 7 years old and he played great, with total composure. It was a inspiration seeing this young lad playing so good. Both Jerry Newberry and Jerry Roller had those Emmons guitars really sounding good. Another high point in the show was getting to meet steel player Jimmy Dreadfulwater for the first time. Yes, that is Jimmy's last name. Jimmy and his whole band are Cherokee Indians from Tahlequah, Oklahoma. Jimmy's first tune was Black Mountain Rag. At first I thought he had been listening to Doug Jernigan. I kept watching and noticed he was playing Black Mountain Rag in A and Doug plays it in B. It was then I realized that Jimmy had his own thing going, and I really liked it. There were so many really good players on the show. Just to mention a few; Louie Hallford, Buck Grantham, Joe Wright and Ray Qualls. I would like to thank the staff for inviting me to play for the 3rd straight year. I had a great time.

Keith, we appreciated you being a part of our show and it is always an honor to have you. You alway play great and did so today.
Thank you for your time spent to make the trip and play for us. And I am glad it was Newberry instead of me that had to follow the 7 year old phenom to be, but really ole Jerry Newberry was beaming from ear to ear and I was very proud of the little guy myself.

I want to know why it is that 7 year old Austin was about the only steel player at the show that was not nervous.

He was Mr Cool.Just sitting there waiting for coach to send him in.

Well maybe besides Joe Wright.Joe has the jerks all the time so I am not sure where its part of the show or nerves. Image

Not really, Joe is always good for something good as well as fresh.A much underrated player in my book.An unmatched entertainer.
