I wonder if I might gather some opinions from players about this tune. I have a chance to test this on a major (MN) radio station and wonder if any of you would let 'er fly as is?

It is only a demo... but Billboards MD of the year kinda thinks it has potential. I may be convinced (or run off) if any of you "settle my doubts"... then again I might "can the whole idea" if things go the other way. It is a small mp3 file - Remember it is just a demo. Test/Slam this steel! I would much appreciate it

Hi Terry nice tune and fine playing, my only comment would be that the mix level for the track compared to the vocal seems out of whack as the vocal appears to be significantly out in front of the track. Maybe it's just the way the MP3 downloaded.

I don't see the point of you asking us what we think. First of all, the steel guitar community is hardly representative of the general public who would be buying your record. We tend to be more conservative and traditional in our music choices. You've seen how many long for music from the 50's, 60's, and 70's. We also tend to favor the steel guitar over everything, especially the singers whom we tend to criticize alot, even though the singer sells the record. And as a group, we are also older than the buying public. So using us as a gauge doesn't make sense to me. And second, you never know what will make it or what won't. It's a thousand to one chance anyway, but it's a chance you oughta take. Why care what we think? If you gotta have some opinions, get hold of a couple of producers who have some credentials. Terry, everyone here will tell you that I'm notoriously frank, honest, and opinionated, and prefer classic styles as opposed to more contemporary styles. Nevertheless, I consider what you've done equal to, or better than, most of the stuff I hear on the radio. The steel's got a definite "Paul Franklin tone", and the tune has a "catchy" rhythm that I haven't heard in awhile. Both of those are in your favor. The lyrics are simplistic, but with today's audiences, they're quite adequate. I see nothing major wrong, and a professional remix would probably make it quite "sellable" (if the singer has the requisite visual appeal that seems so necessary in today's market).

I wish you luck, and I'd be proud if I had done it myself!

p.s. I'd like to hear a slow version of the same song...I think it would be equally as good, but probably just not as "commercial".

Hey Terry,
First let me say I admire your gutsiness, putting your work up for all to check out this way. I think without a doubt your playing is far and away the best thing about the track; really cool tone, strong thematic ideas; would love to have heard some more fills in "the holes" in the verses, but maybe that's a sign I overplay... I wasn't wild about the guitar sound or the verb on the vocal, but hey you sound GREAT and I wish you lots of luck. Nicely done.

Terry...I'd forget the steel, play the Strat to cut down on band costs. Your voice has a new fresh sound and like Donny said, it you can charm the females, go for it as a singer. The steel playing was nice and differant than we hear everyday so it might just fit todays market.

Terry, i'm not a steel player but i'd like to comment on the song. I like it a lot. It has a 70s kind of feel. But sounds fresh for today. Interestingly your voice reminds me of myself, same with the guitar solo. I love the Srat tone. Can you tell me what Strat you are using?

Technically, i also hear the mix is uneven. But keep the voice out front just raise the levels of the steel, drums, and bass a tad. I am also experiencing hiccups, wow and flutter. I suspect i have a corrupt download. The steel sounds great with the delay on there. Nice choice tones. Great hook and melody. IMO, this is what we need more of in music... QUIET! Enough with the overblown productions, give the tune a chance to breath. Nice work Terry.

Thank for all of the responses everyone! I really appreciate all of the compliments and critique. So as to clear up any misunderstandings about the post originally, I put this track up here for critique due to the fact that I have a chance to "TEST" this track. It doesn't mean a whole lot in the overall picture, but can help get the balls rolling. I am the writer on the song. I also produced this demo and played the steel track after everything else had been recorded. The steel track was originally only meant as a guide... the song was never finished... dah da dah dah... so, now this somewhat powerful MD comes along and says he would like to test it... it's fine. I thought I'd inquire here too.

The day I think my opinion (or anyone elses for that matter) doesn't make a difference anymore is the day I stop believing in God and life and the rest of this perception in which we live.

The Wildflower cut with Shania was in 1993. I produced the arrangement and as bandleader took it upon myself to record the rehearsals. That was one from our first show rehearsal.

I liked it. Commercial? I don't know...who does, anyway. But I admire your steel playing, and the vocal is fine. I think the singer (you, too?) would sound better if the song were about a tone and a half lower. Not that it wasn't on key...just would have a more resonant sound. I agree that it might be a better tune if at a slightly slower tempo. And professional mixing would no doubt enhance the job. Just my opinion...(and who am I anyway?)...Great job. I would be proud if it were me.
