What about a "RICKY" sound on your Steel????

YES! For years I wished and fantasized about my Guitar sounding like a Rick.....but since I had been lead to believe years ago that all Ricks had by now turned to dust I just sorta gave up on the idea. Yet for whatever reason, I still have that knawing, gut wrenching sensation inside that makes me want to know what a great pedal steel guitar might sound like with a prewar Rick pickup mounted thereon/therein. DO YOU KNOW???
What's the secret? A computer chip or what?

Ray- The "Ricky" PU is not the answer. I took the PU out of my 7 String Rick in 1962 trying to build my first guitar. Fortunately I was s After 40 years fooling with Steels I stillmart enough to put it back in ole Rick and I still have it. There are so many material and mechanical things that can alter the sound. My "Fiberglass" Pedesonic with an Emmons PU and Fender Twin sounded great. After 40 yrs fooling with Steels I still like to experiment. Ed

I don't know about getting a 'Ricky' sound out of my pedal steel, it's difficult enough to get a 'pedal steel' sound out of my pedal steel!

I'm not sure about a "Ricky" sound, but some people refer to a "retro" sound out of the PSG. I have experimented with my ProFex on this sound. It's a modification of the Dobro setting. Sounds pretty cool. Anyone have any patches of the retro on ProFex they want to share?

If I wanted a "Rick" sound I'd buy a Rick. I have a Franklin and perfectly happy with it's sound, I don't want it to sound like a Rick.

Oh and in all seriousness....I'll have to go with Jack on this one.
I want my ShoBud to sound like a ShoBud and Emmons to sound like a Emmons.etc...and if I wanted a Rickenbach sound......"get a Rick".
Or if I wanted the best sounding steel in the world; I'd build one myself like the one just below......

Yeah, I hear ya. I love my Emmons sound. Sometimes I like trying to get a different sound if the situation warrants. It's fun to turn heads if you can pull off a copy of say, a Duane Allman slide guitar, Dobro, or in this case, a cool retro tone.

Tommy WHite......not questioning either your answer nor your decision.... quite the contrary, I do respect your view and thus must ask, is there something about a Rick sound that you with your vast knowledge and expertise don't like in particular? If so, might you be kind enough to expand on it? So many folks that have had the Rick experience are committed devotees to the Rick so your view I feel, would be quite timely;valuable.

I have the cut of Tom Brumley doing "Panhandle Rag" on his Anapeg. He produces an amazing Byrd/Rickenbacker sound. The chords and the "feel" are all there.

My post was not intended to raise any bristles. I appreciate the tone of a bakelite, I just don't prefer that particular tone on my pedal steel.
I feel they are two individual and beautiful
instruments in their own way.
