SGR, LDG, and "I Can't Hear Clearly, Anymore"

Post by Bill Cutright »

(I know, I know… but knowbody seems to read that thing , very much.)
I really don’t mind (too much) putting up with the distorted sound, or the constant buffering, but I sure wish they’d at least put up the artists name-like they used to, sometimes).

But that’s not why I called…

Heard a real nice, live, version of “I Can See Clearly Now” that was, obviously, based on the LDG interpretation. Was it him? What was the recording from? It had “THE” tone(in spite of the SGR limitations).

Also, they’ve been playing another live Lloyd selection and there’s some dialog included. (one of his mid-period originals-slow ¾ then switches to 4/4, based on minor progression) This all had me wondering if it was from the same thing.

Thanks, all.

Bill, Yes it's Lloyd. He recorded "I Can See Clearly Now" on the "Shades Of Steel" album on Monument-C.B.S. around 1973. It was released in a live from St.Louis album that Scotty put out in the late '70's. That album had Lloyd,Buddy Emmons,Reese Anderson, and Doug Jernigan. Each of them did two songs on the album. Lloyd's second song although the title escapes me fits the description of the other song you mentioned. Mike

Bill,
On "I can see clearly now" Lloyd got the octave string sound idea from a Wes Montgomery tune he heard in his car while he was on his way to a recording session. He told me the tricky part was when he had to play the harmony as well Image

"Midnight Silence" is the song that`s 3/4 going to 4/4 shuffle in the middle and back to 3/4.

Mike,I`m planning to go to Nashville in the beginning of April. Will you be at the Palace?

Lloyd's cut on "Killing Me Softly" is a killer cut. Also he did a strange rendition of "Steel Guitar Rag". Jody.
[This message was edited by Jody Sanders on 07 January 2002 at 09:30 PM.]

Is the "Live At St. Louis Volume III" available, preferably on CD? I have the two album set of Buddy Emmons live, but have only recently heard of the third album with Lloyd, Buddy, Reece, and Doug.
