I downloaded 11 MS patches last night figuring they are important. Today I've gotten some explorer message boxes where it shuts down. I hope it's a passing fluke.

Ron;
Many Microsoft patches eventually require patching themselves because so many programs depend on the underlying APIs that were built into Windows various OS releases and service packs. Everytime those APIs are altered by a patch something will break until the patch is patched, or the program vendors catch up to the new patch issues and write updated programs/drivers. Your problem may be the result of a change in the way certain calls to the OS are allowed to function. If it is an internal Windows problem MS will find and fix it with a re-release of the offending patch. Otherwise, one of your programs will need to be updated to keep working with the new security patches.
My Microtek SlimScan C6 USB scanner stopped working after one of the April or May patches was applied. Something was changed in the way hardware talks to the OS and MicroTek has not released an updated driver because the scanner is out of production.
