yet another NEW EBAY scam..

Post by Tony Prior »

I received a message from an EBAY member, thru EBAY..asking what payment methods I accept ..no reference to any auctions , no references at all...

they asked for my PAYPAL Account EMAIL address , PO box for Money orders etc...

Problem was as usual. the message was sent to my primary EMAIL account mailbox which is not tied to EBAY. My seller account uses a totally different EMAIL address..

I searched the EBAY member in the EBAY advance search..no such member...

be aware...

I have forwrded the message to EBAY security..not that it will mean anything...

Tony,
The same thing happened to me. I clicked on the item number and it was a phony.

Again, depending on the scammer, clicking on anything in these phishing emails can be big trouble. Be very careful.

I've had my own problems with Ebay. I once bid on a steel guitar, and didn't have the winning bid. Later, I recieved an email outside of Ebay saying that the winning bidder had backed out of the deal, and that my bid had been accepted. The so-called seller then stated that he had already shipped the guitar to my address to save time, and was demanding immediate payment. Fortunately, I had been warned by Ebay of this scam and didn't fall for it. (This was after the infamous "$1,000 Maverick" incident
in which Ebay finally relented and let me out of that stupid deal, with the help of Forumites).

the message was sent to my primary EMAIL account mailbox which is not tied to EBAY. My seller account uses a totally different EMAIL address. </SMALL><HR></BLOCKQUOTE> This message was NOT sent "thru Ebay". It was sent to thousands of random email addresses. The scammer is betting that someone who gets it will think it was sent thru Ebay and respond by clicking the fake Ebay login button in the email.

These phishing scams have nothing to do with Ebay or PayPal. They are counterfeits. If someone asks for a blank check from your checkbook with your signature, do you blame the bank?
