disk error

Post by erik »

I started getting some blue screen errors recently so I decided I'd defrag. When trying to do so I got a message saying that I had errors in "system" files and I need to run scan disk first. When doing so I got a message that I had some long name files no longer attached to any program(or something to that effect). I had the choice to fix, delete, or ignore these errors. I chose to fix. My entire sysytem was fixed and then I was able to defrag. My question is: Was that a mistake to fix them? Should I have chosen to delete? Thanks.

You took the (slightly) safer path. The only thing you have to lose by keeping extra files is disk space. That said, make sure you use an up-to-date antivirus program often.

Hmm, I was wondering if they represent a virus. I have been going without anti-virus on my latest install. When I defragged I saw black boxes dispersed through the files. What does this mean? Bad files? Virus files? Thanks

Here is free antivirus software that I use:
http://www.free-av.com/

It's not as good as Norton Antivirus, but you can update it for free and it has a good reputation.
