Digital Camcorder/Firewire problem

My son just bought a Sony DCR-TRV340 digital camcorder and is trying to get it to work with a Firewire card he installed in his Asus motherboard running Windows 98 SE.

Firewire seems to be working but everytime he plugs in the camera and turns it on, the computer either freezes or reboots itself.

I found a post on Usenet suggesting it might be a problem with Asus motherboards and Firewire. Does anyone have a clue what might be going on?

Jim,
I don't really know for sure if this will help or not, but here's something that happened to me recently...

I installed a Pinnacle Studio DC10 video capture board on my computer back when I was running Windows Milennium and it worked fine. After I upgraded to Windows XP, everytime I would try to load the drivers for it, XP would automatically reboot as soon as I tried loading them. I changed to another PCI slot and the problem went away and it worked perfectly.

I said all that to say this...If he's got another slot in the computer to plug the firewire card, try moving it to another one. It's amazing what a simple thing like that can do at times.

We have a digital cam and a dual digital/analogue video recorder here which connect using a cable that looks just like Firewire but is not actually compatible.
Just check with the manual that it really is Firewire!

Sorry for not getting back with the solution. He swapped the Firewire card with another PCI card closer to the CPU and all is working well. Thanks Lem!
