A pedal not staying in tune.

Post by Daryl Hockin »

Happy Holidays everyone!

I've got a question about troubleshooting an issue. I have an S-10 Mullen and the A pedal on string 10 will not stay in tune. Every time I tune the pedal, the string goes wildly out of tune and vice versa. The tuning nut is almost maxed-out. I'm guessing it might be that the spring has stretched, but I really have no idea. Also, I live in Europe, so I can't really take it anywhere to get repaired. It will have to be a DIY job.

Any advice or ideas on how to fix it would be much appreciated.

Could be a couple of things. Since you mentioned that the tuning nut is nearly maxed out you may have overtuned the string.

Try this. Back out the tuning nut several turns to where engaging the pedal does nothing. Use a tuner or make sure the 10th string is in tune with the 5th string with no pedals. Start tightening the tuning nut on the 10th string to get the string to C#. If you can't make that happen then I would replace the string and try again.

Also check you pedal travel.

Hope this helps.

Happy Holidays.

One other thing.

Take a look and see if the return spring is moving when you engage the A pedal. If that is the case your diagnosis could be correct and maybe all you need to do is tighten the spring.

10th string to C#, not A. Unless I'm missing something?
