The Eagle has landed

Post by Bill McCloskey »

Just in time for christmas, I now have the first production model of Jimmie Hudson's lightweight 2x1 pedal steel. It comes in two light weight gig bags, that you can throw over your shoulder. First impressions: well, it is never going to replace my Mullen but for what it is, and the price point, it is a nice little steel. Sounds good. Took me a while to figure out how to tune the E's lowered (you basically need to adjust between both the keyhead and the hex nuts.) But for the money ($900 and change shipped) and the lightness of it, I'm quite pleased so far. Never thought I'd find a steel that made the ETS seem heavy. Wide string spacing, more like a dobro, which will take some time to get used to. But it really sounds nice and is not difficult to play at all. Pictures below:

It is the middle six strings of a 10 string E9th. E lever and A&B pedals.

Been playing it for the last 30 minutes, and other than getting used to the string spacing, I really love this little thing.

I had Scotty's light SGI guitar and the problem with lighter guitars is, when using knee levers, the guitar could easily move.
Tom Bradshaw designed something that stabilized the guitar by attaching the pac-a-seat to the guitar so the weight of the person and the seat kept it from moving.
A great idea!

Took me a while but I finally figure out how to tune a pull release guitar. For those who haven't tuned one before: the trick is the lowers: on the E lever, you tune the Eb at the keyhead then release the lever and tune the open string at the hex nuts. Took me awhile to figure that out, but now it is in tune and sounds great.
