Steel in North Florida?

Post by Derrick Phillips »

Hey folks, Anybody know of steel players in the Jacksonville area or anywhere close to Northeast FL?

There was a pretty happening scene a few years back but as far as I'm aware the North Florida Steel Guitar Association shut down. They had Joe Wright come in at one time and John LeMaster played there regularly.

Anyway, would love to catch some steelers in the wild.

Derrick, I don't play a lot of gigs, but I still play pedal steel at maybe a dozen or so a year. In fact, I played at Amelia Island this past Sunday for "Get Closer", a Linda Ronstadt tribute, starring Debbie Rider.
You can see and hear some good steel each Saturday night at nearby Woodbine, GA. Robert McCullers is the fine steel picker and leader of The Woodbine Opry band.

I'll be playing in downtown Jacksonville at James Weldon Johnson Park next Friday the 26th with The Rip Currents from 11:30 to 2 in the afternoon. It's mostly surf rock music with pedal steel, guitar, bass and drums. I hope you can join us!

Thanks Guys. Missed these replies but I’m taking notes!

Thx John,
Looks like Woodbine is a little over an hour - not too far to hear some steel.

Hi Brian,
I used to catch you with the Camels back in the day. Time flies. Just went to the 35 anniversary show. Paul Wells played.

Hi Tony, I’ll keep you in mind come November.
