Al Petty

Post by Keith Hilton »

Did Al Petty die in prison? Al was sentenced to 292 months in prison in 2003 for a multi-million dollar Ponzi scheme. The Federal Prison would not let Al have a pedal steel guitar. Gene Fields built Al a special lap steel, and gave it to him. I happened on a picture on the internet of Al playing the lap steel in Federal Prison. Some people have asked me if Al is still alive, I doubt that since he was 69 back when he was sent to prison. Did Al spend any time in the Federal Medical Center in Springfield, Missouri? I know he was in Federal Prison in Tyler, Texas.
Here is the link to the picture I found on the internet.

Yes, he did die in prison. We had a discussion about this a few years back. This is a quote from me about it.
I had some skepticism about this being the Al that we all knew, so I searched his inmate number and found that it is indeed him. He is listed as deceased May 31 2017 at age 83.
Here's a link to that discussion: [sorry, had to fix the link]

I had bookmarked the link where I found his inmate information etc., but that computer crashed and I lost all my bookmarks. Anyway, most all of those other links have gone dead.

If I remember correctly, Al Petty performed at Scotty's Convention and his pedal steel had pedals that operated both forward and backward.....and he was really into effects.

He was quite the innovator.
