What’s your favorite Dan Dugmore track?

Besides the obvious Blue Bayou, which we all love, what are your favorite tracks or albums Dangerous Dan played on? Mine are “A Showman’s Life” and “Bourbon Borderline” by Gary Allan. I think Dugmore plays on all 10 of Gary’s albums and they are all amazing. (Franklin & Turner played on a few tracks throughout the years as well)

I love that signature little bar shiver Dan does and the way he’s able to evoke so much emotion and feeing in his playing. He’s definitely the reason I had to buy a Pedal Steel. His solo in Blue Bayou was the first thing I learned.

Robby Turner was the steel player on Gary's "Alright Guy" record on every song. Dan was on "Used Heart For Sale", "It Would Be You", "Smoke Rings In The Dark", and was on some songs on the "See If I Care" record. On the "See If I Care" record, Robby and Dan play on certain songs-Dan plays on six of the songs on the record, and Robby plays on five of the songs. Bourbon Borderline" is one of the songs on the "Smoke Rings In The Dark" record, and another great solo by Dan is on Gary's version of "Don't Tell Mama"

Thanks for the insight Brett! Here’s a trivia question for ya. One that always stumped me from the “It Would Be You” album was a song called ”I Ain’t Runnin Yet” that has some incredible playing. I’ve always kind of assumed it was Dan playing. Now after really listening it sounds more like Paul Franklin’s style and I’ve second guessed it ever since. Lol!

It's Paul on "I Ain't Runnin' Yet. I just remembered the only Gary Allan records I listened to in order started with "Smoke Rings In The Dark", then Alright Guy" and "See If I Care".

Interesting. I had looked at the credits for the “It Would Be You” album on AllMusic.com and the credits list Paul Franklin. Wikipedia gives credits to both Paul Franklin and Dan Dugmore.

Dan's the steel player on Travis Tritt's "Down The Road I Go" record on songs like "Best Of Intentions" and "Love Of A Woman". "Love Of A Woman" features a great steel solo by Dan. He's also heard on Travis's "Strong Enough" record on the song "Strong Enough To Be Your Man". I wondered if the steels on those two albums were Sho-Bud steels

Not a lick or solo but somewhere I have a CD from about 20 years ago by Rick Trevino, the Texas singer that had a few hits. The whole album is a study in tasty playing by Dan and Kenny Vaughn on guitar.

I saw Kenny in Nashville at Roberts one night. He said he remembered doing the sessions but ad never heard it. Only time I ever met him and he wasn’t in a talkative mood. $:\$

I agree Craig.

I'm new to pedal steel (longtime semi-pro musician) and have been listening to alot of steel to find some players and tone I like best. I was locked into Ralph Mooney, Bruce Bouton and Sonny Garrish, then stumbled on this. I'm now listening to all the Dan Dugmore I can find.

Any other suggestions?

Check out Lloyd Maines w/Joe Ely, Dan has a solo album called 'Off White Album' Beatles cover tunes, Carla Bonoff records.

Robby Turner from Nashville has some great Cd's out and plays on plenty of things, also Al Perkins with Manassas and others.
