is it just me?

Post by Samuel Phillippe »

Is it just my dorky way of looking at things or....???? Why is it when I read the for sale amplifiers I see more peavys than other brand names? Are they that bad or just the only ones we, as players, use?
Not saying anything bad or good about any brand, just plain curious.....
Let the comments flow.

I think you see a lot of Peaveys for sale because, number-wise, they have been the dominant maker of amps specifically for pedal steel since the mid-1970s.

mid-70s: Session and LTD 400
late-70s to early-80s: Session 500
early-mid-80s: Nashville 400
early-90s: Session 400 LTD
late-90s: Nashville 1000
early-mid-2000s to present: Nashville 112
2010's: Session 115

I think they were, pretty much, the only mass-producer of amps specifically aimed at pedal steel players for a long time. Most of these were made in quantity, and prices were generally reasonable. There have been many pedal-steel-specific amp makers - Evans, Webb, Fender with its Steel King in the early 2000s, now Little Walter and Milkman, and so on. But I think the quantity numbers are a lot smaller, and the price numbers are quite a lot higher in most cases.

That situation has changed. I think Quilter has challenged everything here. And I think that's reflected in the number of amps for sale. For example, just on the first page, there are 4 ads for Peavey, and 3 ads for Quilter. You'll see the occasional ad for the others, but I think those are the two brands that now dominate the used amp ads.

I would say that since you are seeing them for sale on a steel guitar site and there were more Peaveys made and used by steel guitarists than any other single brand, that would be the main reason. I love my Peaveys and for a long time, they were the best tech supported brand.

More Peaveys

Post by Steve Spitz »

You see more peaveys because they made and sold a lot of them.

Another reason is they’re nearly indestructible, so many gig worthy examples are easy to find.

Lastly, many were made at a time when there wasn’t a common lightweight alternative. Some of us aren’t as young as we look anymore, so it makes sense to sell off a heavy amp in favor of a newer lightweight amp for us mature players.

They aren’t at all bad. If you can play, and the weight isn’t an issue , it’s an attractive option at a very reasonable price point.

thank you all for your comments....I can see what you are saying about psg BUT I see alot of them on Craigs list also.,...I picked one up and wish I didn't, must be too damn old and wore out.........They do sound good though on the videos.
Again, nothing being said bad about Peavy. They are apparently a good amp, just was curious. thanks again for your input.

For solid state amps, I prefer Peavey.
For tube amps, I prefer Fender.
