Dobro effect for steel...
Probably read this before, but I bought an EQ and it is so noisy, I can't use it. That is using a battery, plugged in right after the VP! What are you gents using for an EQ? Thanks!

Danelectro Fish & Chips. Got rid of the Boss years ago because it was noisy. I also have it before the volume pedal.
Carter D10 8p/7k, Dekley S10 3p/4k C6 setup, Regal RD40 Dobro (D tuning), Recording King Professional Dobro (G tuning), NV400, NV112, Ibanez Gio guitar, Epiphone SG Special (open G slide and regular G tuning guitar) .

Thank you...
Thanks Richard, after posting this, I did what I should have done and did a search. Most said just what you said and pointed to the F&C EQ! I picked up another one but had it plugged in post VP. Now Pre VP and the results are much better. May look for a F&C EQ to try!
Thank you!
Thank you!

Mr. Sexton: First of all, you didn't say what you bought.
Was it the Boss GE-7, or something else?
If it was, and you are semi-handy with a soldering iron, the mods to quiet it down are relatively easy.
Note: Supposedly not ALL GE-7 versions are mod-able. Some of the newer ones have SIP ICs and are not. The older ones have DIP ICs and are fairly easy.
This has been covered on the forum many times. I may have posted the mods in the past.
Supply chain shortages: If you can't find a Danelectro Fish & Chips, Behringer makes an EQ700 which is inexpensive. However, I have not tried one so I cannot vouch for its noise characteristics. Maybe someone else on here has. They are so cheap that I've been tempted to buy one just to get an answer to the question.

ajm... Thank you!
Appreciate the great info. I solved my noise issue on the EQ700. I had it hooked up pre volume pedal and it was very noisy and unusable, but pre-VP it works ok. I have since picked up a Fish and Chips EQ and will do a comparison of the two later tonight. Just for reference, I bought the EQ700 from Sweetwater and they have reached out to me and offered to replace it gratis and allow me to keep the original. Now, can that be beat? Don't think so!
Again, thank you very much.

I have heard that the Behringer is a decent unit. As far as the Boss EQ, I only noticed noise when I was recording. It was acceptable for live performance.
Also, hooking it up before the VP allows you to vary the picking intensity and have it respond.

EQ700 verse Fish & Chips
Just A/B these units. Understand I'm no Dobro player, but an untrained ear thinks they can be made to sound the same or as close as I can hear by adjustment. Not like a Dobro, but close. For the two or three songs in a night that might require a Dobro sound, considering the venues and amount of booze flowing, that would be good enough in most cases!
Problem solved, case solved and closed!
Thank you, ajm and Richard...

I find that dialing back the 2nd slider to about 1/2 to 2/3 helps tame that bass problem.Bobby D. Jones wrote:A Nylon or plastic bar will give a Boss GE-7 a lot better tone and sound, When compared to a metal bar tone.
Some amplifiers have to have the Bass cut back, To give a better Do-Bro sound through the Amp also.

I second your motion. I have a Fish & Chips as well and it is really quiet. I use it w/ my pedal steel for dobro as well as my two high gain tube amp stacks (using the high gain setting for metal/thrash those amps have enough excess noise without throwing in a noisy eq)
the Fish & Chips is a winner
