I clicked "other" because for the last few years, this particular setup of two S-6s probably gets more attention than the other four-five instruments in my regular rotation.

Steel guitars are like Lay's potato chips, in that you can't have just one.

Scott, thanks for this - I shall follow it with interest. I play a uni 12 for weight reasons but I find it can do both "necks" just fine at my elementary level.

There are those who reckon unis will never catch on, but every time I look at the forum it seems that someone else has bought one :)

D10, It seems after owning several D10's and S10's over the many years and bringing one or the other to a show (gig) ,it's apparent that consistency suffers, at least for me. We can never play a tune or even dabble on the C6 if its at home.

I sold my last S10, I doubt I'll ever buy another. What has happened over the last few years is I now play several tunes down under on gigs. If I didn't bring a D10 I would be missing the lower neck even for just a few tunes.

Yep, they weigh more. I found a way to deal with it. TWO !
One lives setup in my music room, one lives in the case by the door . AND the proper cart.

The thing is, for me, I want to play C6th so I need to bring a D10 to accomplish this. No I don't want a UNI. My tenure is totally D10 and thats just the way it's gonna be till I hang it up !

Please don't suggest that I should grab a UNI , not going to do it. A Push Pull, a Legrande II , a bunch of Teles and my legacy is written, one way or the other !

What do we want to play and study musically ? my take is thats what should determine what Steel we own.

thats all I got !

My Justice is currently getting her Universal conversion. I posted as "other" to to her remaining as S10 (Pro-Lite). I dont need the lower strings of a 12, at the moment.

gotta say... it's nice to see the good ol' D-10 taking the lead here. I realize this is a very small number of total players but I'm not too surprised by the results thus far.

I was just thinking the same. Tiny fraction of the membership, but still what you'd expect.

Depends on the situation. D-10, U-12, SD-10, an old Fender 800, and sometimes a lap or console with 6 or 8 strings.

Most of the time, SD-12 extended D9 (I voted S-12 Ext E9...close enough).

I still bring out the Fender 400 8 string now and then when a song needs a distorted solo. I have my own copedent I call G15 that is very symmetrical and much more fun to solo on than extended D9 (G-B-D-F#-A-C#-E-G#...aka alternating major and minor 3rds) though I usually don't use the pedals for soloing...and it literally sustains forever through my Line6 processor :)

I also have a 10 string MCI that sits in it's case (which I'll likely sell soon) and a BMI S-12 I'm restoring that will probably be extended E9, though could take a spin with the Zane Beck uni tuning ;-)

I have been playing D12 steels since 1962. Went from custom 6 pedal Fender 400 to MSA D12 and never looked back.

I've moved Dennis Montgomery's Fender 400 copedent discussion to it's own topic in the Pedal Steel section:
