Unconventional good time!

Post by john widgren »

I attended the Brooklyn Steel guitar unconvention last night, and really had a good time. It lived up to its name in a great way. The talented line up was eclectic, interesting and, well..unconventional. Really a lot of fun, hearing different approaches to the music of the steel guitar. The Jalopy theater is a great venue and the room has a very warm and good sound. The un-contrived and authentically cool Jalopy bar and restaurant is right next door, and is perfect for talking and socializing when not next door listening. The general atmosphere was very welcoming and congenial.

Thanks John Eichleay, and Raphael McGregor who are the founders and driving force behind this project which I believe is an important new venue that will serve to expand the audience and parameters of the music and instrument that we love. John and Raphael both played too...beautifully!

A quick note about headliner Murnel Babaneaux: His set was the highlight of Sat night. Great and inspiring playing and wonderful rapport with the crowd. He told informative stories about the origins and history of Cajun Steel and included some very touching anecdotes about his personal musical journey.

So friends...see you next year!

PS: The black on black unconvention tee shirts are really cool...and sooo Brooklyn!

Best always

JW

Sounds like a good time. Our son lives in Brooklyn but by next year's event will have moved away. Otherwise I might have been able to coordinate. This year didn't work out either :( but glad it went well.
Many play better than I do. Nobody has more fun.

Studio

H Joachim,

The story is nothing special but here it is:
I had the privelege of having done a number of other projects at Acme studios with the phenomenal Rory Young and Peter Dennenberg. They very kindly referred me for the work. I was honored to have gotten the call.

Regards and Best,

JW
