Pedal Steel in New Zealand?

Post by Bill Bassett »

If I were to travel to the North Island of New Zealand, would I find a population of Steel Guitar players and fans? Just curious, you never know, it could happen.

There are one or two forum members from Christchurch on the South Island.

Forum member Paddy Long is based near Christchurch, and there are a few players I know of around Auckland -- but the chance to see pedal steel live up here doesn't come around too often! I guess I'd ask how long you're here, and where you'll be going? :D

I'm in Christchurch (as is Paddy Long).
I'm playing this Sunday afternoon in Darfield, but due to lack of space may not take my Pedal Steel. I could have my arm twisted though.
If coming down our way PM me!

Hi Brooks,
I live in Blenheim and would be more than happy to meet up with you if you can let me know when you are coming. Please don,t expect to see live steel here. We are very thin on the ground. Most people don't even know what one is.Just send me an email if you would care to. Blenheim is a small town and only 10 minutes from anywhere.
Cheers,
Warren Johnston.

Hi,
You could look up Joe Martin (a long time player) if you end up anywhere near New Plymouth in the Nth Island. I am over the hill from Joe in a wee town, Taumarunui. As you can see, not many of us around - Cheers

Just thought of another Steeler in the Nth Island. Harold Strong who resides in Matamata

Warren, thanks for reaching out. I'll try and give you a ring next week. Just left Blenheim , I'm in Motueka, and then up to Takaka and Golden Bay (fishing). A very good friend bought a nice place in Blenheim, and we'll be back to drink up your great wine!

Brooks if your down Christchurch way at any stage sing out as I play pretty regularly around the traps here, and the South Island in general - nothing coming up in the North for a month or two though.

I'll be in Colorado in May and June, and Aussie end of June ! (not that that will help you hehe)

Warren will look after you in Blenheim.

Thanks Paddy. I'm not going to make it down to Chch this year. Plus I think it would break my heart--haven't seen it since the big quake. I'll keep in touch should we divert further south,

Paddy, Warren, Greg, & Sandy, I just returned home from NZ. Man I love that place!
I lost my phone on day 3 while fishing up in Golden Bay....so that was interesting!
Never did get to take in any steel, but I did get to sit in with the local band at the Brigand Bar in Takaka one night on harp (harmonicas are easy to travel with), and that was a blast.
The guys were good.

I can’t wait to get back—you guys are very lucky to live in such a beautiful place.

Thanks Brooks
As a (supposedly) retired person, We are trying to get away as often as possible in our Motorhome and see the wonderful sights on our backdoor. We just spend a night in Kaikoura and woke up to a 'Picture-Postcard' view out our rear window with the added sight of a luxury Cruise Ship just off the beach (at South Bay).
We were there to purchase a small Suzuki 4wd car to tow behind our Camper so we can explore off the beaten track!
The Band I'm in plays only occasionally so I can fit these trips in around my music. The best of both worlds, I suppose?
Come back soon.
Cheers
Sandy
