Best pedal steel on country records

Post by Austin Tekamp »

Hey everyone! I’m quite new to the pedal steel game and am wondering what everyone’s favorite records with pedal steel are? Preferably country.

Hey Austin, I do not know how to put a link here for CD like Dick Wood did. But if you go to you tube and put in Curtis Potter name you will like. Also one of my all time favorites is this one. It has Steel and Fiddle all over it. Gary Carpenter on steel and Bobby Flores on fiddle. It is an old one but still can be found. It is pure country. Recorded in 2001. Good Luck, J.R.

Any of the songs off this album by Wanda Jackson. Ralph Mooney on steel guitar. Some of my favorite steel playing of all time.

Also this album of Wynn Stewart. Sounds like Mooney on it also.

I don’t know how I could have forgotten the Commander’s “ Hot Licks, Cold Steel, and Truck Drivers’ Favorites”, with Bobby’s astounding steel playing.
Same with The Black Brothers “Pickin In A Skull Orchard”, which should be required listening for any steel player.

Indeed, Dick, notwithstanding the unsolicited political ad at the beginning of the video...

On the Gospel side the "Wanted Live" album by the Happy Goodmans with Jack Smith at 16 years of age knocking it out of the park. Lets not forget the hundreds of records Sonny Garrish played on as well. There are so many Gospel albums that have wonderful steel playing by Garrish.
