Allen Hutchinson, Kilkoy - Brisbane Steel Guitar, Australia

Post by Jeff Spencer »

Many will know Allen from his active posts here on the non pedal section.
It is with deep sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our dear friend and brother in steel guitar, Mr Allen Hutchinson. Allen was an accomplished lap steel player favouring the Resophonic acoustic steel guitar. Allen processed an incredible knowledge of vintage lap steels and was always willing to chat about steel guitar in general.
He was a very active member of the club, rarely missing a gathering. Allen also was a performer and sponsor to our yearly festival. He was noted for his very 'clean' execution of tunes.
Allen's passing has left us all mourning a great human being gentle in nature and incredibly generous of heart.
Rest in Pearce Allen.
We are sure going to miss you mate!! Happy playing some great tunes with Jim, Warren, Graham and Murray 'up there'

Very sad to hear of Allen's passing Jeff, he was a lovely bloke and a great Dobro player - I always enjoyed our Reso discussions each time I came over to the festival.

The steel guitar community will be missing a great guy, and I for one will miss his sheep jokes :-} ! although he never realised that they all originated in Australia hehe ....!

RIP Big Al

It was a sad shock to hear of Allen's passing. He was a great soul always up for a laugh and always very supportive of the club. When it came to the festival he would always be helping out as a volunteer if he wasn't playing.
The first time I heard a dobro was at the 2012 festival and he was playing it.
I would need to spend hours/years/a lifetime polishing my playing up to have anything like the skill level that he possessed on the dobro and lap steel.
I will miss hearing his stories from everything steel guitar related to Sunstones, The Birdman of Alcatraz and his niece that he was very proud of.
I wish I had of been able to spend more time picking his brain.
We are all going to miss you Big Al and the Dobro Corner won't be the same
