When the plane went down in 1959, what I recall as a 12-year-old living in West Hollywood was that RITCHIE VALENS HAS DIED was the Big News. To a lesser extent, the Big Bopper's death was the news because "Chantilly Lace" was a big hit on KFWB, my favorite r&r station at the time. But strangely I have no childhood recollections of Buddy Holly... oh well.
