One of the simplest things I've found useful is a little AAA-battery metronome. By now, half the devices around me have a drum track or you can dial up a metronome on your computer, phone etc., but the little, cheapest Korg is RIGHT THERE, no dialing, it takes two buttons to let me glomph onto any tempo around - and everybody already HAS one, and you CAN'T "read your e-mail" while you're setting it. "Read your e-mail" being code meaning "screw around for another half-hour without practicing."
