Russ Pahl's Copedent
Anyone know how his guitar is set up? I was always curious since I'd noticed he just had A&B. Figured he's gotta have some weird KLs.

nothing weird, just no need for it, he is a session cat, and plays on top radio hits, how much steel guitar they need we all know... 10 years from now all the steel needed on top songs will be done with a lap steel...15 years from now there wont be any steel on any county top 40 radio hits... just watch ...Neal Vosberg wrote:Anyone know how his guitar is set up? I hate the fact that I may be right, but I just don't see steel guitar future as bright as some other guys... steel guitar is turning into a side instrument for lead players, other words, what I see is that more and more young lead guitar players are buying cheap little S10 steels just to use them to play a song or two in the show, to change the color of the band picture a little ... I talked to a buddy of mine Glen Duncan few days ago, and he told me the story when he played at CMA awards, on the main rehearsal he was on the stage with couple other guys, when steel player from the other band showed up setting up his steel, Glen noticed that knee levers were taped to the bottom of the guitar, and asked the guy that played in the other band what was up with that, the guy said, oh, steel player always has his knee levers taped up to the body under the guitar because he never uses it ... there you go ...

Steel is as steel players do. If this simple setup is what it takes for the instrument to survive through this current trend, more power to people like Mr. Pahl. I bet he can do plenty with it, and I bet if you sat him in front of a U12 8x7 he would know just what to do.
Incidentally, I am one of those lead players who is doubling on PSG. I do not take the responsibility lightly. I bought a very well made but affordable instrument and I certainly do not tape up the knee levers LOL.

I'd like to see the copedent for that. I've been playing D6th with A & B pedals added to it. I like the slightly darker timbre of a D tuning.Wally Moyers wrote:His new guitar is a D9th tuning...

guy that taped up the knee levers wasn't a lead player doubling on steel, it was an actual steel player... I don't necessarily see anything wrong with that, it just shows that role and way the steel guitar is used and played in todays music is changing.... days of Ray Price and steel guitar being in the front of the stage almost as exposed as a singer are over...
