Midland 'Drinkin' Problem'
I heard this song a few weeks a go on a Canadian Country station and really like it.

The steel is really nice and sounds very much like Steve Hinson, I may be wrong, and usually am, but I'd like to know who plays on it. I've done a few searches and have come up empty.

It's getting quite a bit of airplay at least on the Saskatchewan country station I have need listening to.
Curt, I read that they were influenced by Gary Stewart and Merle Haggard, I also love the 1970 Cadillac in the video, it's my favorite year.
Still nobody chiming in as to who played steel, still think it's Hinson.

Lee, Your group should consider this song too, has a Texas vibe and also just a great song with prominent steel
I think these guys are my new favorite band, this song is 'Burn Out'

Do we know who the songwriters and producers are? I have a feeling that either they're old-timers who were around back in 80s or they're younger professionals who are students of that era and love that genre... but don't get the opportunity to express it much.

They've been playing around the Austin area for three or four years now, they're a real tight band, good singers.
Haven't seen them in awhile, but they weren't carrying a steel guitar when I did. Maybe now they do... dunno.
I don't recognize the steel player on the 6139 Sho~Bud in the "Fourteen Gears" video, since he got less than a second of screen time... naturally
... and the hot babes singing harmony got way more screen, but that's the way of things nowadays.

My rig: Infinity and Telonics.
Son, we live in a world with walls, and those walls have to be guarded by men with steel guitars. Who's gonna do it? You? You, Lt. Weinberg?

I really like the songs and the whole video editing of them, kinda a retro Gary Stewart sound as they self describe. Wish it was the thing that was, more often what was heard on country radio today.
But I read a review of them on the website savingcountrymusic.com that was very critical about them, I won't link to it, but it's easy to search.
It describes them as kinda a big music creation, and embellished their story a bit, but truthfully I don't care much about the back story too much, if it sounds good, it is good, as much as I respect that the website, I also think that they are so much better than most crud out there today, and hopefully the big wigs are finally realizing what descent music sounds like, but I'm not banking on that, but maybe.......?

Herb,
Thanks for chiming in too, I was raised on your playing when I was in high school, especially with Ronald Clyde Crosby from Oneonta, NY, I wish we could bring back some of that magic in today's music that you were a key part of back in the day (and I hate that term, I've always felt that today is tomorrow's good old days, so take advantage of them).

Midland Drinkin' Problem
My OCD is flaring up real bad. The awesome steel solo in Midland's "Drinkin' Problem" caught my attention the very first time I heard it and I spent considerable time trying to narrow down the possibilities of whose style it most "felt" like. But the musical fingerprint just wasn't clear enough to make a solid call. Naturally I came to the Steel Guitar Forum for answers or even clues. Nothing but speculation. Good speculation, but nothing firm. So I bought the single online. No credits provided. Bought it from another source. No credits again! So I did what any irrational music-obsessed person would do. I Facebook stalked Wystrach's mom and even sent a crazy note to the band. Lo and behold, I received a reply! Midland says although they enjoy working with Dan Dugmore, the credit on this song goes to Mr. Paul Franklin. Man don't he play purty!

I think the song pays more homage to Gary Stewart myself. But you're not misunderstanding, the band's schtick is stylized vintage country.G Strout wrote:I don't get it.... or perhaps I am missing something (??) This is a re release of a song that was #2 on the Billboard charts and #1 on the RPM charts in 1994. Done by David Ball.

Just a follow up. I rec'd Midland's new CD "On the Rocks" yesterday. I like this band. Smooth, polished, and outstanding vocals.
Here are a couple of tunes off the album

and Lonely For You Only

My 2 cents worth on Midland, you can a least 2 step to the music and if you can't find a lady who will dance with you then you can sit and have a drink and listen to them doesn't mean you have a drinking problem. I like the music at least it's not that Rap Crap who knows maybe they can turn country music around as I'd much rather see them on an awards shows than some of the others and in reference to the pretty ladies singing maybe it's time we start seeing more pretty ladies playing the steel in more bands, I know I use to like watching Barbara Mandrell play.
