Paul Franklin - Together Again....How...?

Post by Tim Russell »

How does Paul get that huge string stretch? On Together Again, and other songs as well, I've always loved it.

In this clip at the 2:23 mark; I see him rocking his left leg but I can't tell what he is doing on the pedals or knees. It sure sounds like the 5th is being pulled from B to E. The bar stays on the same fret.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dAHfcqzhag0

Is that what you guys hear? 5th string raise? There are also other songs where he pulls two strings in unison that are the same type of long stretch. I don't have an example right now...

His copedent on the forum doesn't reflect a 5th string raise of that amount...

Hi Tim, I don't have my steel set up right now so I don't know exactly which string groupings and pedal and knee lever combinations are being used but I believe the first part of the lick starts on the 2nd string lowered a whole tone. Then release to the open note, then raise a half tone, then release, then lower a whole tone again. Then he's re attacking the strings. strings 3,4 & 5, raise 5 a whole tone, then release.

Right. At 2:22, under the high Bb and G, the moving voice D E F E D is string 2 (two knee levers)
The at 2:24, under high A and F, the moving voice D to C is string 5 (A pedal)

The "falling off the cliff" move @ 2:28-2:35 is what totally knocks me out. Sounds like a complete screwup is about to happen......but, of course, all three voices resolve perfectly.

Outstanding.

Hmmm... I really think I hear strings 3,4,5 there. He is on B & C pedals, and plays that lick through with those same strings ringing out.

I know I can get that lick using the 5th string, but if Paul is doing it some other, perhaps easier way, I would rather follow his lead.

Earnest,

You are right on. Although this move could be completed with the 5th, it is the 2nd string with both raise/lower knees. I had a chance to sit down at the guitar this morning and I have it now.

Funny how the coolest sounds are right under our nose, lol.

Jim,

That "falling off the cliff", descending run lick is also very nice. I use that one in a few Gospel songs, always loved that sound.

Yes, Paul's backslants...

another trick I cannot master, lol. For some reason, I cannot get the hang of holding onto the bar while shifting it like that.

Maybe if I saw what he was doing over his shoulder it might be a bit clearer to me.

Tim,

There's a pretty good view of Paul's slants in this version from the Marty Stuart show:

I can't do that with a 12 string bar, maybe with a 10 string, I play(own) S12s, and the bar is too long for me, I have to do a wrist backslant. May need to grow longer fingers. BF

Tim - would you be able to share how that one's done. It's lovely.

Even with the good view, I have a hard time with it. My problem is, I lose grip on the bar, the down pressure. I can't figure how to grip it while pivoting it like that. Some guys have it, some don't.

Does anyone have that tabbed out or can share with Jeff how to do that descending run lick?

I can describe it here, but don't have time to tab. I'll do my best, hope this makes sense. It is really a super easy lick, but sounds difficult. A fantastic, awesome sound!

Start at 10th fret, A/B pedals; pick 4,5,6...then, 5,6,8. Then lower E-Eb knee. Slide back to 9th fret, pick 4th string, then 1rst string, slide back to 8th fret. Done!

I might add, look at Vince right after that run/lick...he loves it too. :D

Thanks for that. I could hear the AB with the E lower but wouldn't have figured out adding string 1. I cant wait to try that when I get home.

Once we master the reverse slant that Paul executes so well, perhaps we can begin the task of learning the 360 degree spin that Buddy would do on occasion.

Notice how hard he picks the strings, it makes a difference.

Yes, I did notice his hard attack on the strings. He emphasizes passages very well with that. :)

I have heard of Buddy doing that - unreal! Does anyone, by any chance, have a video of him spinning it like that?

5:30 is a complete 360........3:00 is just a regular slant, then he picks up the bar.

All cool stuff, though!

I'll get right to work on that 360, lol. :whoa:

If you think my guitar has bar dings now, just wait...

That is just simply amazing, especially 5:30. Thanks for posting the video. I wonder, has any other steeler, pro or otherwise done that?

Not quite certain, (with the guitar player egging him on) thought that I noticed one of them actually being a double spin??

Dale is right. I have those changes on my guitar. Paul lowers his 2nd a whole tone on LKR and raises it a half tone on RKR He also raises his 1st and 7th a whole tone on his RKR.
