How many play Nightlife on the E9th

Not being much of a C6th player, I never was able to play Nightlife that well without screwing it up. However I can play it on E9th and still get the needed fat chords. Just wondering if any of you other guys do the same.

I'll go opposite, years back I was playing what I thought to be a reasonable version on the E9th but still trying to emulate the Buddy version so to speak. Right here on this forum it was discussed, probably 10 years ago. A very fine well established well known national and TV player sent me a quick note telling me that it was pretty good, then ..

DANG..

He said play it downstairs, spend your time and energy to learn the phrasing , the progressions and multiple positions that line up with the 5,6 and 7 pedals which match the progressions and substitutions. He was not talking about just Buddy's intro and turnaround, he was talking about the entire chart with the 6ths, Maj7's, Dim, Aug chords etc, which all lay right there within a fret or 2 of each other. As thats the power of the 5 pedal C6 standard tuning with a couple of levers.

The way he said it was something like this, you can spend the time and energy to work out an arrangement up on the E9th which is good, but it's already right in front of you on the C6 ! PLUS, the C6 arrangement will go miles further down the road with other songs as there is a common thread .

I fought it for a long time ,probably intimidated, being a mostly E9 player mashing the AB peds Ad infinitum . But as of late there is an incredible amount of SIMPLE magic down on the lower ten. Who knew that a stock 1-6-2-5 progression only covered two frets in a few different fret board positions !

E9th is great, no doubt , no argument from me but there is a certain element of tonal characteristics which is absent when subbing C6 progressions up on the E9th.

I think we are all accustomed to playing in our comfort zone so stepping outside is like learning how to play all over again, truth is, it is !

regardless, Night Life is a great song and anytime we get to play it, E9th or C6th, we should.


Side note; remember I'm just a simple man but lately I have been playing many of the common C6 positions on various songs with the band, similar positions , basically the same chords and a few licks here and there out of 2 or 3 scale pockets. My guitar playin' buddy leaned over on the last gig and said, "I didn't realize you were a C6 player " !..My response..'I'm not, but it's fun and sounds good " !

I play it on E9th. A friend gave me the tablature. I think it sounds about as good as it does on C6th.

Truth be known, we can play Nightlife on a Ukulele or Banjo, it would not be wrong, just a different perspective, a different approach, different tonality.

If we are wanting to emulate the deep tones and sub chords that Buddy used then of course C6th is the place to go. E9th is a nice alternative but , it , to my ears, sounds remarkably different. Not bad, not wrong, just different.

It's just a song and a chart.

But at the end of the day, it's just a Blues song, so play it on the 6 string'er as well.

I do it on the top neck. doesn't sound too bad, but can't get those bottom lows, so gotta get with it and learn it on the C6th.
