Got to see the PBS ACL Americana Music Festival 2016 hosted by Jim Lauderdale tonight.

Enjoyable show with some pretty great artists supported by Buddy Miller and company with really nice pedal steel and slide work by Steve Fishell.

The finale with George Strait's delivery of Lauderdales's "King of Broken Hearts" had a wonderful steel break by Fish.

Thank God for ACL & PBS.

Holy cow; Fish sounded great on everything he touched. Beautiful playing! Thanks for posting the link.
Lots of stringy things, many of them slidey.

To Jerry, Bob and everyone,

Thank you very much for your kind words regarding the Americana Music Association Awards taping at the Ryman Auditorium September 21st. I was very honored when my old friend Buddy Miller called and asked me to join the house band. He mentioned George Strait would be paying tribute to Jim Lauderdale, someone I've known since my days in LA (I moved to Nashville from North Hollywood in 1988). Then Buddy went a step further, saying Bob Weir from the Grateful Dead might be paying tribute to Merle Haggard (historical note: the Dead were into Hag early on and even played "Mama Tried" at Woodstock in '69). The wild notion that I might by lucky enough to play with both Bob Weir and George Strait on the same night, same stage was just too good to be true. Thanks Buddy!

The night was exhilarating on many levels, especially Steve Earle's emotional version of the late Guy Clark's "Desperadoes Waiting For a Train," and it's a never-ending joy to be able play behind Emmylou and Rodney.

I had to use many effects that night to cover a lot of "territory" between artists (I even got to use a phase shifter with Margo Price). If I had it to do over again, I might back off the distortion about 50% on "Mama Tried," but hindsight is 20-20. All in all, the night was a big, big thrill.

Again thanks a lot guys.

Steve
