Steel on New Pop Record

Post by Rick Abbott »

My 20 year old daughter just texted me to check out a song by her favorite band, Miniature Tigers. I was surprised to find it full of pedal steel!

Here's a link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ye2yyoykBk

The player is a Forumite named Spencer Cullum. I'm glad to see steel show up in such an unexpected place.

Here's a video of him playing a nice single 10 Show Pro.

Yes, Mr. Bovine, he's way out front in the mix

Lotta good stuff there! It's about time we got some significant steel, mixed way out front, instead of the muted pads that are normally featured in pop music. This is what young people heed to hear to bring them around to appreciating the pedal steel as a lead instrument. :D

That's why I posted it here. We go in spells airing our fear that steel is dying, or that it's becoming a lost instrument. Here is proof that some younger and other-than-country types are getting on board. Pretty cool!
