Sqeaky Pedals and Knee Levers...

Post by Grant Johnson »

The mechanal parts are solid but noisy on my Marlen.
Should I lube all moving parts? I have tri-flow at home, will this work for lube? Or is there a better lubricant that steelers use?
Thanks in advance for any advice!

You didn't say how old your steel was. Noisy? As in "squeeking"? Lubing will help the thing to feel smoother (and stop squeeks), but a lot of the mechanical noise in a pedal steel results from the design and from wear. When the clearances increase from hundreds of thousands of pedal and lever operations, the "clikety-clack" becomes an unavoidable tendency. A teardown and cleaning, and re-lubing with a light grease (instead of oil) will stop some of the noise, but the plain fact is that mechanical parts will wear eventually, and make more noise.
