Are these string gauges unbearably odd?

Instruments, mechanical issues, copedents, techniques, etc.

There's some Vinci pedal steel strings on ebay that must be for C6th, but the gauges for the high G, C and low C are quite different from what I'm used to - still useable? http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2533016172&category=41433

David, if you look at the picture it does says "10 String C6th". I used to use Vinci's about twenty years ago on electric 6 string and they were good strings. I think they either made strings for a lot of companies or they invented a string winding machine. Then there was only about two or three companies that made strings for all the brands and they were one of them.

I think that the .010 for high G is pretty weird, and an .018 for high C might break under the strain of pedal 7. Maybe they researched it, though. Hard to tell.

.064 for low C should be okay.

I don't know about the .010 but the .018 has been the standard gauge for Emmons guitars for years and years. It's all I've used for over 20 years. And it does fine and I've never broke one.

I have used .010 for the hi-G# string for many years because it dosen't break near as often as an .011 or .012 that most folks use.

As for the tone and sustain of this gauge string,I find that it (while a bit tinny sounding) has an acceptable ring and isn't that far removed from a .011.

When-ever I attempt to use a .011, It usually breaks durrin' the tunning process. It's hard to get it to pitch without extreamely careful streching and winding before I really attempt to pull it up to pitch.

Just my experiences with it : Image Image

But this is a G on C6th, not a G#. Seems too thin to me, but I guess it would work.
