Finding the strings on the E9

Post by Bob Doran »

Hi all. I am new here and just wanted to thank everyone here for all their efforts.
I can't believe how lucky we are to have this site.
When starting the steel guitar, the sheer number of strings, and their seeming random order, can be overhelming.
The following logic has helped me a lot.
The fifths occur at the fifth and 10th strings (5x2=10).
The thirds occur at the third and 6th strings (same logic).
The octaves occur at the 4th and 8th strings.
(8 is the octave)
The dominant 7th and major 7th occur at the end of the scale, and so are located just inside the outside strings.
Finally, the F# is on the First string (both start with "F") and the only remaining string, the 7th string.
The knee levers raise and lower the octaves a half step.
The A pedal raises the fifths a whole step.
The B pedal raises the thirds a half step.
The C pedal raises the 4th and 5th strings a whole step.
Here is a picture.

String raise lower Scale E scale A B C
1 2# f#
2 7# d#
3 3 g# 1
4 1 1 1 e
5 5 b 2 2
6 3 g# 1
7 2 f#
8 1 1 1 e
9 7 d
10 5 b 2

Hope this helps.
Bob

The computer compressed my chart and ruined it. Sorry. It was a nice, simple chart of the strings and levers.
Oh well...

Bob click my Edit button and you will see the "tab" code markers and how I put them in....and then you'll know.
Also there is all this info in the Help section above.
