USPS failed delivery notification

Post by b0b »

There's a virus email going around that I haven't seen until today. That's odd because I get them all - my email has been public on many lists for well over a decade. The subject of the email was

USPS Failed Delivery Notification NZ3GQFHYF2GZ

Return address was noreply @ usps.com.

The sender botched it and didn't include the virus payload, but there are numerous suspicious indicators in the message. Here's a Snopes report of a similar virus delivery using a UPS message:

Don't bite on any of these. The Postal service would not ask you to open an attachment. This is a dangerous email so delete it immediately if you receive it.

I write anti-spam filters that detect and block these and other variants that spoof UPS, FedEx, the BBB, FDIC, NACHA, ACH, BOA, IRS, Facebook Friend Requests from Muslim names, SendFile notices, Scan from a Xerox Workstation, etc, etc.

All lead directly to either the Zeus or SpyEye Trojans, or a new up and comer, plus free admission into the spam botnet that sent the invitation to you.

Spammers are at war with society. and at war with every individual they infest. They should be shown no mercy.

String 'em up.

It was William Shakespeare who wrote, "The evil that men do lives after them: the good is oft interred with their bones."

A virus has the potential to stay in the internet as long as the internet continues to exist. They're accumulating day by day, and eventually the internet will become unusable.
