No comunication between printer and computer.

Post by Ed Altrichter »

Hi ! I have started getting messages that there is no communication between my printer and my windows XP home edition. I have un-plugged and re-plugged both several times. What to do next ? Ed

If you still have your soft ware for printer, reinstall and will probably work. Mine did same thing. Henry

I have the same problem with my Dell laptop and Dell printer. Even with updated drivers, I can not get the 2 to talk. If I want to print from my laptop, I have to copy what I want to print onto an SD card or USB thumb drive and print from my Dell desktop. Nothing I have tried or has been suggested to me works.

There can be several reasons. The first thing is a problem in the printer. Drivers are another. A problem with the USB cable, A problem with the USB port (or ports), a status problem on the USB port with windows, etc.

As you have "replugged" both ends of the USB cable, try a different USB cable. Next, with the Printer connected go to the Device Manager and check the status of the printer and note if the USB section shows an "unknown device" (which would indicate a corrupted status in Windows).

I know this isn't my thread, but I am having the same problem.

As for Jack's suggestions, in my case, I have downloaded the current drivers for my Dell printer and installed them on my laptop (Vista) and no luck. I have tried several different USB cables, plugged into different USB ports on the computer and still no luck. The printer has to be good as it works with my desktop (Xp Media Center Edition) with no problems. I am pretty sure I have done the Device Manager thing, but will try again to be positive.

There have been some other issues with the Dell units (which are Lexmark's made for Dell).

Have a look at this thread from our Dell Printer GURU and see if something he has listed will help.
