RAR Compressed Archive File Reader?

Post by J W Alexander »

Anyone have a great free-to-use .rar reader? I have a favorite older photo processing program I need to reinstalled but it arrives via the 'net in that .rar extension.

I wish I had or had kept the original CD of the software---hate the newer versions from the same vendor.

Thanks all!

Assuming you're using Windows, try WinRAR:

If you have an "old" program and you now have a new OS (e.g. Windows 7) it may or may not work with Win 7. If it won't install/run in native Win 7 there are options for compatibility modes that MAY let it run.

I'm running Win XP Pro and the CD-ROM I have actually loaded onto this very computer a few years back-----I know its compatible with that OS. (Just as soon as Win 7 falls out of favor I'll only then upgrade! :) Keeping up with the cyber byte wars is NOT my thing!)

As I'm loading the program from CD it will reach 97% of completion then seem to proceed no further---have to pull up the Task Manager and end a few processes in order to resume normal computin'. I notice an applicaion named IKernal.exe seems to be the hanging point---when I stop it everything returns to pre-installation operation.

Could that IKernal.exe appliction be an issue?

Thanks again all-----wish I could find an original program copy of Ulead PhotoImpact ver 7.0!

That file belongs to InstallShield. Check out these search results on Google: http://www.google.com/search?q=IKernal.exe

Guys thanks for all the info-----as always y'all were quite helpful.

Wiz I did visit your linked site and found another page with slightly different info that clicked something in my own memory. I didn't have a firewall when this software was originally installed but do have one now--that might make a difference. Here's another like to the mentioned page: http://www.computing.net/answers/pda/ik ... m/610.html

I did get the issue resolved by loading and using the newest version I have which isn't as bad as I remembered-----funny how time changes things! :)

Thanks again-----very very much!
