I'm just wondering if this is a safe method to log into your own computer from a remote location, or what else is it good for, like maybe helping a friend with a computer problem.

GoToMyPc is highly touted. It's designed to troubleshoot computer problems remotely. http://www.gotomypc.com/remote_access/remote_access
There are other options, of course.

I've been using the free version of Logmein for several years. No problems. I like it very much.

I use the free version of LogMeIn, and rarely at that. It works fine and is secure.

I have used the commercial program GoToMyPC and recommend it for business users and serious traveling individuals.
