How do I set the SMTP Option?

Post by George Kimery »

I have a couple of things I want o sell on the forum, and potential buyers will want me to e-mail them photos. I borrowed my girlfriend's camera and have the photos OK on my desktop in Picture Project. I got as far as importing the photo ready to e-mail, but it is a no go. Here is the message I get: THIS MESSAGE COULD NOT BE DELIVERED BECAUSE YOUR SMTP SETTINGS ARE NOT SET. PLEASE USE THE ACCOUNTS PREERENCES PANEL TO SET THE SMTP OPTION OR YOUR ACCOUT.

I opened the Systems Panel and found an icon of accounts. I opened that, but have no idea what to do next so that I can e-mail photos.

I am using a Mac OS X 10.4.11. I am not too computer literate, so if somebody would lead me by the hand, I would really appreciate it. I have a guitar and a new product I want to post and I need the picture sending ability ASAP.

Thanks,

If you're on a Mac, you're using Apple Mail, right? The SMTP setting is your outgoing mail server. You get to that in Mail by clicking on Mail/Preferences/Accounts/Account Information. You'll see a box at the bottom That says Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP). Set it to your ISP's mail server. Comcast, AT&T, or whoever you use.

I might add that if you don't have an email account set up in Mail for the email address you get from your ISP, you'll have to set one up. Mail/Preferences/Accounts, and then click on the + in the bottom left corner to add an account.

Since you're using an older version of OSX it may be different from mine, but there has to be a place to set up an email account somewhere. Maybe under Auto AOL if that's your ISP. You could try File/Add Account, too.

How do I set SMPT option?

Post by George Kimery »

Hey, Cal:

I just talked to tech at AOL They were very helpful, unitl I lost them when my cell phone service went out, way out here in the country, which is common. I don't have a dedicated line for my computer and I had to be on line for them to help me. We were within 2 or 3 minutes of having it all worked out, then I lost them. However, they did tell me that I didn't have to set up an SMPT account, that I could just use the regular AOL e-mail system. So, I have been toying with that, and got it to work, so I am OK now. The only deal is, I don't know how to compress the photo's down to a smaller file. I clicked on a box that said compress files, but when I tried to send myself a sample photo, it was a 1.2 mg file, which took about 12 minutes to send. This can be a pain if I have a lot of people to send photo's to, unless I send them to all of them at the same time. So, if you cam enlighten me a bit on how to get the photo file size down, that would be great. If not, then I am still OK. It just takes a long time for my dial up to process a large file. Unfortunately, high speed is not available out here in the sticks.

I uses Photoshop, and I get a photo down to around 30 or 40KB, which is a good size for email. You can find lots of free photo compression apps if you Google. One such is http://www.irfanview.com/
You might also consider an account with Flickr or Picasa. AOL probably has some sort of photo sharing thing.
