FaceBook????
Well, I see by the date of the last thread that was posted, nobody ever visits here, but I didn't know where else to post this: What's the deal with face Book? I guess I signed up by clicking on something, but didn't know what was going to happen.
I consider myself a friendly sort of feller, but I'm getting requests to be friends with folks that I've never met. I think before I can call someone a FREIND, I should at least know something about them. I have connected with some people that I've lost track of, and That's all well and good. I've even asked to be accepted as a friend from someone I don't know very well, and they may not know me, but we've heard of each other, and have MUTUAL musician friends. I thank them for accepting me, and they usually thank me for accepting them, and we both know, that the first chance we get, we're gonna pull up a chair, and have a grand visit in person.
I was also warned by a friend about the dangers of accepting some folks, family included. He told of a story where a long distance cousin became his facebook friend, and that included some other cousins he didn't even know, and the younger generation started posting some very foul language, and general filthy comments to others walls. I don't think thats what this whole FACEBOOK thing was intended for.
So, If you've asked to become my facebook friend, and I haven't responded, it's probably because I don't know who you are. Some names I recognize, some I don't. I see some names from the forum, and I'd sure like to be freinds with everyone on this great forum, so please send me a message, and tell me who you are. Thanks for your time, Chuck Cusimano

Facebook's privacy settings are a huge, confusing morass to try to understand. FB can be a good way to connect to old friends and to people with interests similar to yours, and you might even get a gig once in a while, but don't put anything on there you wouldn't want your mother or a future employer to see, and use a good password. And don't click on any suspicious links, even those sent from someone you know. Their account may have been hacked. I did get friend requests from people I didn't know personally, but if they're steel players I'd usually accept them.

I'm with you, Chuck.
However, I DO think that's what this whole Facebook thing was intended for. Virtual lives replacing real lives.
I've been told that a lot of young people are very competitive about how many "friends" they have on Facebook. Apparently, there are bragging rights to how many "friends" you have.
As a result, you see dead people shown as friends--and worse. Obviously, the account holder has never even laid eyes on or had a phone conversation with many of their "friends".
Imagination has apparently replaced reality in a lot of households.
I don't get it. I guess it is just a sign of the times and yet another indicator that, this time, the end really is near.
This "social networking" jazz has even carried over into forums. I know of a very large forum where this "friend" thing is widely used. I joined it, now knowing about the practice, and within days I was bombarded with "friend" requests from total strangers who will forever be anonymous and with whom I have had no interaction.
Of course, I am the last dumb-ass in the country who has never even used a cell phone. I am just another Luddite who is operating about 20 years behind the curve. Pay me no mind.
