Win7

For those of you that use it, how do you like it? I am thinking of upgrading from Vista.

The general consensus is that it is a success. It works well on my PC with no issues. Think of it as a serious refinement of Vista. It occupies less space and is a bit snappier in general. There are a few obvious changes with the interface, but if you savvy Vista, you can figure it out pretty quickly.

But--no overriding reason to upgrade if you are satisfied with Vista--I wasn't.

Try this before you purchase an upgrade, to determine if you even want to!!!

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/window ... visor.aspx

This will load a small program onto your computer and determine how well Win7 will work with your existing system hardware and software.

The biggest problem seems to be sound card compatibility with Win 7. I see a lot of posts on both the Dell Users Forum and the Windows 7 forum about problems with sound cards (and Integrated - on the motherboard - audio systems). In most cases Vista drivers work with Win 7 since Win 7 is basically "Vista improved" but audio drivers and specifically drivers for SoundBlasters seem to need Windows 7 specific drivers. There is a Beta driver on the Creative (SoundBlaster) downloads for the Xfi series of cards that seems to work OK in Win 7 and this beta driver also fixes a problem in the 64 bit version on systems with over 3GB of RAM.

I got a new HP laptop with Windows 7 about 3 weeks ago. It replace a computer with XP pro, which I liked very much and had just worn out. The Windows 7 OS is just great. I haven't had any problems at all. The interface is a different but very intuitive and easy to learn.

I bought a new HP desktop with Win 7 in it, but Win 7 will not support my 1 year old HP printer. I was on line for about 1 hour with an Indian (working for HP) who helped me install the driver, but you could tell they knew this was going to be a problem. If HP is installing Win7 in their computers, they should support their own printers.
Win7 seems like it is okay, but I still prefer XP.

It's not Win 7's fault your HP printer didn't work "out of the box". Normally, printers (all in ones or whatever) need to be installed using the vendor's drivers - not just hook it up to a PC and it works. HP does customize Windows and tends to include drivers for many of their printers with their PC's but again it wasn't Windows 7 (or Microsoft's) fault if any blame it was on HP.

I've got Win7 on my new laptop and it works great. Windows took about 20 minutes to locate my HP printer driver cause I was too lazy to walk downstairs and get the driver disk but i could have gotten it off the HP site a bit quicker. There's nothing about Win7 that would make me want to upgrade from XP. But Win7 has been totally bug free and has some cool features that make it more fun to use.

Maybe I just got lucky, but Windows 7 found and installed its own drivers for my cheap little HP Deskjet F4180 as soon as I turned it on.
