How do you load pictures on a computer?

I guess I'm just a computer idiot! I can't get my computer to load pictures to my "MY PICTURES" file. I've had a program called "Walgreen's PhotoShow" that I was using which automatically loaded when I got my first photo CD from them some years ago.

I was trying to free up space as my computer was getting slower. When you'd instert the chip from the digital camera in the computer, it'd automatically start with a prompt which said "Do you want to make a PhotoShow" to which I'd click on yes and it'd make a photoshow and all but all the pictures would automatically go the the My Pictures location.

Since I've deleted that program I can't get it to do anything. When I insert the chip from the camera, nothing happens. I know there must be a way to do this that's simple......Thanks in advance...JH in Va.

Here is the manual method used to transfer picture files from a memory chip to a particular folder on a hard drive.

Insert the memory chip into the appropriate slot on the computer. You should hear a ding sound as it is detected and assigned a drive name and letter. Normally, a box will pop-up with a list of options asking what you want to do. However, your deleted Walgreens program may have altered that behavior. Since you deleted the program that dealt with picture files and it did not restore the original action box, here is your best workaround.

When the chip has been recognized (ding!), open My Computer, locate that drive by name or letter, then double click on it to open it to a folder view.

Go to the Start Menu and click on the link "My Pictures" to open it as a folder view. Resize and position this window to one side of the window containing the images on the memory disk. Go to the memory disk folder window, click on Edit > Select All, or click in the area where the files are shown and press Control+A to select all of them, then press the Control+C keys together to copy the now highlighted files. Move your mouse to the open My Pictures window and right-click inside it, then select Paste, or press the Control+V keys. The image files will be copied there. Now, set the View of My Pictures to Thumbnails. You will see what each file contains.

I could find or create a mergable registry file that you can use to restore the original Windows action box that appears when removable devices are connected. However, this feature can be used against you by malware that is set to autorun, when that feature is enabled. The Conficker Worm uses autorun as one of its methods of spreading. My double explorer window file transfer method is much safer.
