reinstalling printer ques

Post by Ron Victoria »

There seems to be a glitch with my HP printer. I was going to remove the program and reinstall. I see there are 5 different parts like support, ect. and one with the actual use. Can I just remove that part and reinstall? How can I select what I want from the install CD? Should I just remove everything and start fresh?

If you want to reinstall the best thing is to go to the HP downloads and get the latest driver and use that.

I would uninstall all of the HP software as it will be reinstalled, physically disconnect the printer from the PC then restart the PC (do not skip the disconnect or PC restart). Do a new install - run the HP install program and ONLY physically connect the printer when the HP install program tells you. If you connect the PC first either the install will fail or Windows could install an incorrect driver.

Thanks, Jack. It took forever to remove all the HP files. At one point, I had to use my original CD for the install Wizard. I copied the HP files to desktop. Now that it's done, can I delete that icon?

If the "icon" is the new downloaded HP drivers I would keep them in a folder on the PC in case they were ever needed again. Or burn them to a CD and keep it with the other HP documents and discs for the printer.

I have a separate C:\Download folder that I download any programs or driver updates to. That keeps them all together and where I can find them if needed. Periodically I will burn the contents of the Download folder to disc to save and then delete anything in the Download folder (and start fresh).

Sometimes, depending on the printer, they might also have a driver that says "driver for corporate users" or "IT users" or something like that on the site. If they offer a slim driver it's worth it to try that first as you really don't the rest of the stuff.
