Question for "The Wiz"

Post by Leroy Riggs »

Hey Wiz,

I have a scanner which request an 'update cable' to program it more conveniently. I may have inadvertently programmed the wrong driver into my computer to drive it.

How do I disassociate that cable driver so I can try to screw it up again using a different driver?

Thx

Leroy;
Try this. Open Device Manager and locate the scanner in the list of installed devices. It may have a yellow exclamation mark before it, if there is a problem with the driver.

When you find the entry for the scanner, uninstall it by right-clicking on it in the list (disconnect the scanner first).

Download the latest driver, or get ready to use the driver disk that shipped with it. Reboot.

Now install the driver that you either downloaded or have on a CD. When the driver has been installed connect the scanner and see if it is recognized and works properly.

The easiest way to get rid of a "mistake" would be to use the System Restore function and restore the PC to a date PRIOR to doing whatever the "mistake" was.

System Restore can be accessed from Start/Programs/Accessories/System Tools.

I've never used 'Restore'. While using Restore, does the system show all changes that have been made to the system during the past x period of time?

In other words, will this process show if I did indeed load the driver into the system?

Depends on the driver. It may show a restore point when the driver was installed or it may just show a "system checkpoint".

If you installed something, such as a driver, and it also created a restore point that would be the "fall back" point. If it didn't create a restore point you would have to use the closest (newest) restore point BEFORE installing the driver.

System Restore doesn't restore items deleted and sent to the Recycle Bin. When you do a System Restore any programs or updates installed (or uninstalled) after the restore point will have to be reinstalled (or uninstalled again). System Restore will not delete user data or e-mails.

The system isn't letting me Restore to Oct. 21th as I need to--it keeps error-ing out by saying, "An unexpected error occurred during Restore: Your files have not been changed".

This thing is still under warranty so I'm taking it in today and get them to Restore the computer.

Thanks for the replies.
