Opera 10.0 browser---why not??? Shortcomings? Problems??

Post by Mitch Drumm »

I used Internet Explorer for over 10 years--no major issues, but it had a couple of things that annoyed me to one extent or another.

About 6 months ago, mostly on a whim, I moved to Firefox 3.5. I don't have any major issues with it either, but just like IE, it has a couple of annoyances.

Consequently, I am at least considering Opera 10, which I have downloaded but not installed.

A brief web search shows no major issues, good speed and security, etc--but you can find the same claims about Firefox and IE.

So, how is it annoying?? What are the most common 3 or 4 complaints and can they be resolved?

This will be on a Windows 7 Home Premium machine, not networked.

Please comment if you have experience with Opera on XP, Vista, or Windows 7.

I'm using Opera as main browser on XP, Vista, Linux and Mac, and have done so for years. I know of only two problems new users may run into: Opera is too configurable for some, and its interface is, and looks, different from that of IE and Firefox.

The rest ... read a power-user's comments from a few months back :)

If your machine will not be on the network, why do you need Opera?

Ken:

I do not have a network at home--eg, 2 or more machines connected to each other. As opposed to "the Internet".

Georg:

I took the plunge and installed it for an hour or so and then gave it up.

As you noted, it isn't intuitive for anyone accustomed to Firefox or IE. I pulled down all the menus and much of it wasn't clear to me.

So, there is a learning curve. If IE or Firefox were terrible, I would be willing to spend the time to ascend the learning curve. It would probably take a couple of weeks.

As it is, IE and Firefox are not terrible, so I will say goodbye to Opera and maybe look at it again in a few years.

I have Opera installed as I maintain a couple of web sites and like to check them with different browsers for compatibility after any changes.
