its pretty cool, way way faster with no bloat. No gnome or kde, just openbox, which is a very customizable window manager. Its built on top an ubuntu minimum install, so all the commands and programs translate (same repos).
I used ubuntu since dapper, so its nice to get back to simplicity.
It comes with all the drivers and pluggins. (British distro so different laws apply) After my install I did an initial update, rebooted, it detected my nvidea card and gave me driver options. Sound, and flash worked out of the box. Set up network printing and ssh in about 4 minutes. very cool distro.

with this distro you need to know the command line more than regular ubuntu, but it is worth trying the live cd. You may need to do a fresh install of ubuntu and see if that helps.
when I first started using linux you had to hunt down drivers for sound and video card and hack them to get them to work. Its got a lot better but as you can see sometimes doesnt want to work right.
lets keep working on your sound issue in ubuntu, as it may be easier to learn some basic command line stuff.
at a terminal type in
Code: Select all
lspci -valso type in
Code: Select all
aplay -llspci is a quick hardware inventory, and aplay -l list sound cards.
I am betting that your on-board built in sound card is interfering with your sound blaster, and its probably just an issue of selecting the right card.
your should see something like this:
Code: Select all
desktop:~$ aplay -l

did you go back to ubuntu and try what I posted in my last post? From your picture of when you right clicked on the sound Icon, the intel device was chosen, when it should have been a creative device. So we need to knock that out first. You probably need to just tick the correct box.
things to do in this order, and please post the results of all three.
1. Make sure the speakers are plugged into the correct sound card, not the original motherboard one.
2.try right clicking the sound icon and like in the picture I posted in my last post.
3. if those dont work, in a terminal type
Code: Select all
killall pulseaudioPlease post the results of all three attempts.
just putting this here so I can find it later:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1052754&page=4
when you get a message telling you to be super, or root, you need to type in sudo before the command, followed by your password. Sudo gives you admin powers. If you type a command and are told that you need to be sudo, type this next
Code: Select all
sudo !!
that tells the shell to redo the last command with sudo in front of it (!! means repeat your last command).

If there are 2 just try the other one even if you dont recognize the name.

if your using vlc:
1 open vlc
2 hit ctl d,
3 chose DVD or audio cd
4 chose either /dev/sr0 or /dev/sr1. You may have to type it in to the dialog box if you dont see 2 options.
A quick way to see what your cd/dvd drives are called is to type in at a terminal
Code: Select all
eject /dev/sr0Also note that there is an audio menu in vlc, which has an audio device selector in it.

Just follow the instructions under "Adding the WineHQ APT Repository" and "Trusting the WineHQ APT Repository and installing Wine."
You also might want winetricks, if the BIAB installer complains about one or more packages not being present: http://wiki.winehq.org/winetricks
All of the directions are on that site...it might look intimidating but there's not much to it. You add the Wine repository, then install Wine with your package manager. Then you use Wine to run the BIAB setup program. Then once it's installed you use Wine to run BIAB.
