Need Proxy Server

Post by steve takacs »

I am looking for a proxy server to use to get around Youtube being blocked in the country where I'm living. Also, how does one use it? I was told you connect using the address of the proxy and then write in the address of the site with which you wish to connect (in this case Youtube.com). Thanks, steve t

If you can do it, can't everybody in China do it? And how then is it possible for the gov't to restrict what you see?

Thanks for the PM, John Very helpful. Ernest, I think very clever people can circumvent but then there is a time lag beofre that leak is plugged. Unfortunately, I'm not that cyber-clever and I'm sure most folks are in my boat as well. I obviously don't want to get into any trouble bu, sure would not mind seeing some music videos. I cold get it up until a few months ago. Thank, steve t

Steve;
When in Rome, do as the Romans do. You don't want the local Thought Police kicking in your door.

Some of it's technical, some is cultural.

It actually is pretty easy to get around. The internet was designed around avoiding single points of failure and their are always ways around the roadblocks. But most Chinese use internet cafes rather than own a computer. You log in as yourself (or so I hear) and your traffic can be traced back to you. There are probably ways around this, too. But AFAIK most people don't want to. To be blunt, they don't like us, and they trust the state when they say that the barrier is for their own good. From what I understand the GFW is not seen as censorship or a breach of privacy, but much like its namesake it protects against "invasion" which in this case is cultural.

Maybe they're right...I'm not about to judge a billion people and their culture.

Part of it is what Wiz said. It's cheaper for them to enforce the rules the old-fashioned way. So really, Steve, be careful. YouTube might not be worth it. I don't know what the risks are though.

And part of it is that we're not so innocent either. The US may in fact be most aggressive country in the world with regards to communication surveillance. I doubt anyone has hard numbers because it's all secret of course. As in China, many here don't see such things as a problem because they see it as necessary to protect the country. I wish we could build a time machine to get Jefferson back here and kick everybody's butt.
