cd burning problem
I am running a P4 3.0, xp pro with 1G ram and 250g hard drive. I am using nero 7. All of a sudden I cannot burn a cd. I did not change any settings nor did I download anything or install any program. Nero just says I have an image drive and need neroburning rights. I have never had that happen. Well I downloaded the nero burning rights program and still nothing. Windows is showing 2 plextor burners which is right. I have changed burners, still nothing. One strange thing is if I have a recorded cd in the drive and open nero then it shows I have a burner but I still cannot burn. This should not be a problem as I have other computers that will burn cd's if I need to. However it is worrying the hell out of me and I really don't want to reinstall windows again. Can anyone guide me in the right direction please?? thanks Winston May

If you have Nero InCD installed (the packet writing software), uninstall InCD. That can interfere with CD burning. I have Nero Ultra V8 and I have it all installed except the InCD program.
If you have it installed, and uninstall it, you will have to restart the PC before trying anything.
If that still does not help, uninstall both drives in the Device Manager then restart the PC and the drives will be reinstalled. This fixes a lot of flakey problems with devices.
To access the Device Manager, hold the Windows key down and then press the Pause/Break Key.

Winston:
I don't know about your specific case, but I have some suspicions about Windows updates occasionally causing problems myself.
I use a program called Speedfan to monitor hard drive SMART status and control fan speeds. It had worked fine for several years, but in the last 3 months has decided it does not recognize any of my fans or hard drives. I have uninstalled and reinstalled it to no avail and I can't think of any other plausibile reason than changes in Windows itself.

I like Nero 7 better than the V8 I have now, but I have had to reinstall Nero to fix problems. If you haven't done that, it's one thing to consider. But, if you uninstall, get the latest version and install that. Also Nero has a "cleaning tool" program that will completely remove Nero and that should be run to completely remove it. After removing, restart the PC before reinstalling.
Here is the link to the Nero clean tool

And Here is the last V7 update. As Nero updates are actually a full version you can just install the latest update without having to install a previous version. You will need the Nero serial number when installing.

Since this happened "recently", have you tried a System Restore back to a date when it did work? If not, try that. System Restore will not delete any user data or e-mails. Also System Restore has an "undo" function that will restore it to where it was before you ran the System Restore in case it doesn't fix it.
System Restore can be accessed from Start/Programs/Accessories/System Tools.
On other thought, if your log on access has changed or is corrupted, it may require logging on as the Administrator and then deleting your user account and creating a new one - even if you are the only "user" and have Administrator rights.
