Taskbar Notification Area?

Post by Chip Fossa »

I was just checking out my taskbar notification area - you know "HIDE"; "HIDE WHEN INACTIVE";"SHOW" etc. -

Question...........

How can you delete anything in there?

There are many old programs that I've long gotten rid of; - but, there they are - all listed.

I try to keep my PC as uncluttered as possible, what with my limited PC capabilities. I just hate stuff that sits there and is useless and dead, never to be used again. I just gotta get rid of it. It drives me nuts.

You would think a right-click on the mouse and DELETE would be all there is to it, but NNNNOOOOO!!!!!

I am your PC. I am the new "HAL". You will never ever be able to accomplish things as easily as you did in the past. "I'm sorry, Dave. I can not allow that."

So, guys (and gals), how can you get rid of taskbar dead fish?

Thanks one and all.

If programs are deleted with the "uninstall a program" function it should also remove any "quick start" program icon. If a program was not "orderly" uninstalled it can leave the icon. There is no "tweakui" like there is for XP and doing a google search it looks like it would take manual registry manipulation (and you do not want to do that) to get rid of them.

If you still have the program, many have an option to have the quick start icon or not and you can get rid of those that way. I take great pains when installing a program to not allow those or if the program still installs them I uninstall and do not use the "ill behaved" program.

The Quick Launch and Taskbar are two totally different things. Jack is correct about the uninstall deal. If programs are properly uninstalled then they shouldn't show up in the notification area (by the clock). Sometimes they will still remain in the quick launch area (by the start menu by default) for unknown reasons but you can definitely delete those provided your taskbar isn't locked.

I have no use for the notification area whatsoever so I just turn it off. This process is quite simple so if you're sick of the notification area here is how you turn it off.

Start>Run>GPEDIT.MSC>User-Configuration>Administrative-Templates>Start menu and taskbar

Remove ballon tips on start menu items>Properties>Enable

Hide the notification area>Properties>Enable

Basically just follow the path above and enable those two group policies and that will turn your notification area into a nice quiet, submissive clock like it was meant to be. (Don’t forget to restart).

Don’t worry if you start feeling lonely and miss having your computer tell you about your network connection every time you turn the thing on you can always go back and hit disable.
